Tips to Help You Enjoy Riding Your Motorcycle This Summer

If you're planning on getting a lot of use out of your motorcycle this summer, use these tips to be sure your rides are comfortable and fun.

Plan Your Riding Hours

We understand that most people don't want to limit the time they can spend riding their motorcycle. However, due to extreme summer temperatures, it's best for you to decide what hours will be most comfortable for you. In general terms, the morning hours are the best for riding because temperatures are still relatively low and the sun isn't shining at its brightest yet. Avoid being on the road from noon to five since these hours tend to be the hottest and most uncomfortable. The early evening can be a good time to hit the road since the sun is setting and temperatures will start to drop. Because the sun isn't as bright, be sure your lights are working properly and that you are wearing reflective clothing so that you are visible to other drivers.

Wear the Proper Gear

We understand that the heat makes it harder to wear long sleeves and pants, but these items are absolutely necessary to keep you safe. Although you may feel hotter under your gear, it will protect you from uncomfortable sunburns. Long sleeves will also help your body stay cooler because your sweat won't evaporate as fast. Invest in light colored clothing so that it will reflect the sun instead of absorbing it. Look for gear that includes vents that can be opened and shut. Keeping these open during the summer will help you stay cool as air is allowed to circulate better through your helmet and jacket.

Perform Regular Motorcycle Maintenance

Although you may have spent a good amount of time preparing your motorcycle after winter storage, there is still more maintenance to keep up with. Ideally, you should give your motorcycle daily visual inspections as well as more thorough inspections on a weekly and monthly basis. If you're not sure what should be included in these inspections, check out this T-CLOCS Inspection Checklist from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Stay Properly Hydrated

Hydration is the key to keeping you alert and healthy on the road. As temperatures continue to increase and the sun gets stronger, you are more at risk of dehydration. To prevent symptoms of potential heat exhaustion and heat stroke, drink plenty of water. Carry water with you and take water breaks as often as you need. If you start to feel extremely fatigued, dizzy, nauseous, and are suffering from a headache, pull over as soon as you can. These signs indicate you may be developing heat exhaustion.

Keep Your Body Cool

Even if you avoid riding your motorcycle during the hottest hours of the day, your body temperature will still rise. The best thing you can do besides keeping yourself hydrated is take action to keep your body temperature at a comfortable level. When you pull over for a water break, use this time to help your body cool down. Pour some water over your body to help reduce your internal temperature and feel more comfortable. Even if the water evaporates quite quickly, your body will still feel cooler. If you're not comfortable getting your gear wet, placing a wet towel over your head can help you achieve similar results.

Be Prepared for Road Emergencies

Whether you're going out for a quick ride or are taking a road trip on your motorcycle, always be prepared for road emergencies. It helps to always carry emergency contact information in an accessible space, such as your jacket pocket. Keep in touch with someone back home so that they can track your location and be more aware of where you are. Always carry a small first aid kit and a simple repair kit so that you're fully prepared for anything. Check out these photos to inspire your next motorcycle road trip!
